Stories of Spiritual Awakening—Tasha Turner

As we lead up to our Awakening Women’s Conference on April 17-18, we pray you are preparing your heart for a spiritual awakening. To encourage you in this journey, we are highlighting stories of spiritual awakenings that women in our church have experienced.  Here is the next story in our series from Tasha Turner, in her own words:

Freedom by definition is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. For so long I was living free. Yes, free to make my own choices. Free to become addicted to alcohol, marijuana, and pain pills; free to be promiscuous; free to be abused; free to have an abortion; free to marry and divorce; free to not love myself.

Yet, with all this freedom, I found myself in a position where I was unable to function, feel safe, breathe, move, or love. That position bred hate, and that hate consumed me.

At the end of 2013, my husband told me that he was scared of what was happening to me, and worried about my relationship with him and my children. With that, all I knew to do was to pray for evil to leave. Over time, I noticed I was free from severe anxiety! That’s when I was awakened to the power of prayer to my Jesus.

I began to have quiet time and read my Bible. Then I noticed I was free in my thinking. The thoughts I was having weren’t the usual self-destructive kind. This awakened me to the power of God’s word.

Then I sought out help with my shame from my abortion. Through Options Pregnancy Center I attended a post abortive recovery retreat in May 2014, and instantly I was free of guilt, shame, bitterness, and unforgiveness. So much so, my husband didn’t recognize me when he first saw me after my time away. This awakened me to the power of God’s forgiveness.

Since then, there has been such an urgency to work to help and love people. So by volunteering in several capacities, I’ve been awakened to God’s will for my life—and that is to be a servant, showing mercy to others through Jesus’ love.

Today I find myself living in a position of living in freedom through Christ.  I feel functional in His will, safe in His love.  I can breathe in His goodness, move through the Holy Spirit, and love through His forgiveness. And this position breeds love, and His love consumes me. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free, then do not be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1
